Strategic partnerships can be one of the fastest ways for small businesses and nonprofits to grow — but only when they’re built the right way.
Too many founders try to build everything alone, chasing the wrong opportunities or waiting for the perfect collaboration to appear. But sustainable growth rarely happens in isolation. It happens through intentional relationships and aligned partnerships.
In this episode of the Keep. Ditch. Try. 15ish Minute Business Fix, we sit down with Natalie Worthan, founder and CEO of Veterans Collaborative, to talk about how organizations can stop chasing the wrong opportunities and start building partnerships that actually move their mission forward.
Natalie shares a simple framework that helps leaders build collaborations rooted in trust, alignment, and shared outcomes.

The Big Shift: Why We Rebranded
Our podcast originally started as the 15ish Minute Coffee Chat.
Let’s be honest though… it was rarely 15 minutes. Most episodes landed closer to 45.
While we loved those conversations, we started realizing something important about our audience:
Small business owners are busy.
You’re answering emails, juggling clients, managing marketing, and trying to grow your business all at the same time. Long episodes can be hard to fit into a packed day.
So we asked ourselves a simple question:
How can we deliver even more value in less time?
That’s where the new format was born.
Welcome to 15ish Minute Business Fix — quick, focused conversations designed to give you practical marketing insight you can use right away.
In This Episode, We Talk About
• What an effective partnership actually looks like for a small business or nonprofit
• Why trust and alignment matter more than the perfect opportunity
• How founders can stop chasing “unicorn” partnerships and focus on real impact
• A simple framework for building collaborations that last
Keep. Ditch. Try.
KEEP
Keep having discovery conversations.
Natalie emphasizes that many of the best partnerships begin with simple curiosity. Instead of walking into every conversation with an agenda or an ask, start with learning.
You never know where a conversation might lead — whether it happens at a conference, through your network, or even while traveling.
Strong partnerships start when both sides understand each other’s mission, values, and goals. Staying open to discovery creates space for meaningful collaboration.
DITCH
Stop chasing unicorn partnerships.
Many organizations spend too much time pursuing the “big name” collaboration or the massive funding opportunity. While those partnerships can be exciting, chasing them often drains time, energy, and resources.
Instead, Natalie encourages leaders to focus on the opportunities already around them.
Real momentum comes from building partnerships with people who are already close to the mission, including:
• Local businesses
• Community organizations
• Mission-aligned collaborators
• People who care deeply about the work
Impact grows faster when you invest in relationships that already exist within your ecosystem.
TRY
Try intentional partnership stewardship.
One of the most common mistakes organizations make is treating partnerships as a one-time agreement. But strong collaborations require ongoing attention and care.
Natalie recommends thinking of partnerships as a long-term strategy rather than a single moment.
That means:
• Checking in regularly
• Tracking partnerships quarter by quarter
• Celebrating wins together
• Staying aligned as goals evolve
Partnerships grow stronger when leaders remain consistent and intentional about maintaining the relationship.
The Mic-Drop Moment
“Partnerships should be transformational, not transactional.”
When founders approach partnerships only with what they need, the relationship becomes a deal.
But when they approach partnerships with curiosity, trust, and shared purpose, something bigger happens. That’s where the real impact lives.
